What’s a PPI Worth for Your Specific Deal?

The Pre-Purchase Inspection Worth-It Calculator helps you decide whether paying for a pre-purchase inspection makes financial sense. It estimates the maximum inspection fee you should be willing to pay based on your purchase price, your expected chance of finding a meaningful issue, repair cost expectations, and how much negotiating power you think you’ll recover.

Turn Your Deal Risk into a “Max Worth Paying” Number

First, the calculator estimates expected avoided repair value: (chance of a meaningful issue) × (average repair cost) × (negotiation recovery rate). Then it converts that expected value into a maximum inspection fee using your budget sensitivity: Low = 0.75×, Medium = 1.0×, High = 1.25×. The result is your “max worth paying” threshold, plus (optionally) the expected net value after subtracting the fee you plan to pay.

Why Your Inputs Matter More Than the Vehicle Specs

This tool doesn’t guess probabilities from make/model—it uses your estimates for how likely a meaningful issue is and what it might cost. Small changes to the chance of finding issues or the negotiation recovery rate can move the threshold a lot because they multiply directly into expected value. Also note that the calculator treats every “meaningful issue” as one combined bucket (it doesn’t separate minor vs. major findings).

How to Interpret Results When Risk Is Low or Inputs Look Extreme

If your estimated chance of a meaningful issue or your negotiation recovery rate is near 0%, the expected avoided value will be close to zero—meaning the calculator will typically suggest skipping the PPI unless you have non-financial reasons (e.g., peace of mind). If you enter an average repair cost that approaches (or exceeds) the purchase price, the model may produce a high “max worth paying” that assumes very high-risk outcomes; treat those results cautiously and reassess your repair-cost estimate.

Financial Worth-It ≠ Safety Worth-It

This calculator is strictly financial and doesn’t model safety risks, legal/title issues, warranty coverage, or other non-repair problems that a PPI can uncover. Even if the math says “Not worth it” financially, a PPI may still be valuable if you suspect hidden structural problems or you’re buying from an unfamiliar seller. Use the threshold as a guide for inspection fee decisions, not as a replacement for professional judgment.
