Get a Macro Split That Respects AMDR—Without Guessing

The Macro Ratio Guardrails Calculator turns your weight, daily calories, and goal (cut/maintain/bulk) into daily grams of protein, fat, and carbs. It uses AMDR-style guardrails so you can prioritize adequate protein and fats, then let carbs fill the remaining calories. Ideal if you’ve struggled with under-eating protein or picking fat too low while dieting.

Protein + Fat Are Protected; Carbs Fill the Rest

First, the calculator sets protein using your selected protein priority (low 1.2 g/kg, moderate 1.6 g/kg, high 2.2 g/kg) and converts grams to calories using 4 kcal/g. Next, it sets fat using your fat priority as a % of calories (low 20%, standard 25%, high 30%) and converts fat calories to grams using 9 kcal/g. Finally, it assigns all remaining calories to carbs (4 kcal/g per gram) and applies goal-focused bias primarily through how carbs end up relative to the other macros.

Why Your Goal Usually Changes Carbs (and Not Protein/Fat)

This tool treats protein and fat as “priorities,” then assigns carbs as the leftover calories. For a cut, it effectively biases carbs lower by keeping the protein and fat fixed and letting carbs absorb the reduction; for bulk, carbs take the largest share of any surplus after protein and fat are set. Because carbs are the residual macro, your selected protein and fat priorities largely determine whether the plan lands within AMDR-style ranges.

When the Plan Becomes Infeasible (Negative Carbs)

If your daily calories are too low for the chosen protein and fat priorities, the calculator can produce negative remaining calories—meaning carbs can’t be assigned without breaking the calorie total. In that case, the result is flagged as invalid/infeasible, indicating you need either lower protein/fat priorities or higher calories. Also watch for mismatched units (kg vs lb), since protein targets depend on correct conversion.

Guardrails, Not Medical Advice

AMDR guardrails are general nutrition ranges and don’t replace individualized medical nutrition therapy. This calculator doesn’t account for age, sex, body composition, training load, medical conditions, or dietary preferences—so treat the output as a practical starting point. If you’re pregnant, managing a condition, or have specific dietary restrictions, consider professional guidance.
