Know in dollars whether the toll is really “worth it”

This calculator compares paying a toll route versus taking a longer free route by turning saved minutes into your personal value of time. It’s built for commuters and drivers (rideshare, delivery, daily errands) who want a clear “take the toll” vs “take the longer route” decision.

Time saved becomes cost—then both routes are compared

First, it calculates time saved as (longer route time − toll route time) in hours. Then it estimates time cost for each option by multiplying travel time (in hours) by your value of time. Total toll-route cost = toll cost + time cost; total longer-route cost = time cost (no toll).

When the “cheaper” choice may not match real life

The result assumes your value of time is constant for every minute saved, and it treats travel times as stable. It doesn’t include fuel differences, parking changes, vehicle wear, reliability, or stress/safety—so if those vary a lot between routes, consider adjusting inputs or using the calculator as a baseline only.

What happens if time saved is zero (or negative)

If the longer route isn’t actually longer (equal time) or it’s shorter than the toll route, time saved is zero or negative, and the tool recommends the longer route by default. If time saved is zero, the break-even value of time is undefined (because dividing by zero isn’t meaningful), so the tool avoids that calculation.

Common input mistakes to avoid

Make sure the “Longer route” travel time is greater than or equal to the toll route travel time—otherwise the comparison won’t reflect the intended scenario. Don’t enter negative toll cost or value of time, and if you choose custom trip frequency, use a positive integer trips-per-week.
