How the Recommendation Is Built (Service × Affordability × Venue Cost)
The tool starts with a base tip percentage based on service quality (poor→lower, fair→baseline, good→standard, excellent→higher). It then adjusts that base with two factors: a tip capacity factor derived from your disposable income and financial comfort, and a cost expectation factor derived from the venue price point. Finally, it multiplies the resulting percentage by your bill total to produce the tip amount, and generates conservative/standard/generous bounds as a tip range.
Why Your Tip Might Change Even with the Same Service Rating
Your disposable income and financial comfort can cap or expand how far the recommendation moves—so excellent service won’t automatically produce a highly generous tip if you’re operating with low capacity. Likewise, a luxury venue may nudge the expectation upward, but the calculator avoids letting venue prestige overpower weak service. The recommendation is also intentionally general-purpose: it doesn’t calculate taxes, mandatory gratuities, or your long-term financial goals.

If your bill total is 0, the tip is set to 0. If disposable income is 0 and your wealth/comfort is set to low, the tool will warn that tip generosity will be strongly constrained. If you choose “luxury” price point, the calculator applies a careful uplift so the venue doesn’t “double-count” prestige by pushing tips too aggressively.
