The tool relies on broad averages rather than breed- or region-specific performance, so management intensity matters more than paperwork does—especially feeding systems, fencing quality, and how often you do health checks. Predator risk can effectively lower what would otherwise be a space- or labor-appropriate plan because it assumes you’ll need more secure containment and supervision. Also, housing capacity is treated as a hard constraint: even if acreage looks fine, inadequate animal places can push the result down to “with caution” or “not recommended.”

If acreage is below 0.5 acres, recommendations are restricted to very small-flock or small-pen options to avoid overstocking. If hours available are under 3 per week, high-care species are not recommended. For milk-focused plans, the calculator requires at least moderate labor availability—so very low weekly hours will downgrade the recommendation even if space and housing look adequate.

This tool does not account for local zoning/permits, disease outbreaks, seasonal feed cost swings, breeding-cycle timing, or market demand—so treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee. Predator risk is modeled generally, not as a species-by-species threat analysis, meaning your local predator pressure could be higher (or lower) than the dropdown. For best results, keep your chosen goal profile realistic and assume you’ll spend extra time on containment checks and basic health observation.
