Global Entry vs TSA PreCheck Break-Even Tool
Calculate exactly how many international trips it takes for Global Entry to pay off versus TSA PreCheck.
Find Your Global Entry Payoff Point (Trips, Months, or Years)
This tool estimates how many international round trips it takes for Global Entry’s extra cost to be recovered by the time you save versus TSA PreCheck. It’s for travelers who already know the programs are both “trusted traveler” options, but want a clear value comparison based on how often they actually fly internationally.
Break-Even = Extra Cost ÷ Time Saved (Turn Minutes Into Hours)
First, the calculator computes the extra upfront cost: Global Entry cost minus TSA PreCheck cost. Then it estimates annual time saved as (international round trips per year) × (minutes saved per eligible trip), converted to hours. Break-even is when cumulative time savings overcomes the extra cost, reported as the number of trips and the equivalent number of years within your chosen analysis horizon.
Why Your Result Depends on “Eligible” Trips and Your Time Assumption
The calculation assumes the time savings you enter applies consistently across your international trips. In reality, time saved can vary by airport, terminal layout, crowding, and which lines you’d have used without the programs. Also, the tool’s monetized comparison (if enabled) depends on how you value your time—if you’d rather not assign a dollar value to time, the break-even is best interpreted as a trip-count rather than a cash-style win.
What If You Fly Internationally Rarely (or Not at All)?
If international round trips per year is 0, the tool will recommend TSA PreCheck because there’s no time-payback to recover Global Entry’s added cost. If time saved per eligible trip is 0, payback can’t be calculated since there’s no time advantage to offset the price difference. If Global Entry costs the same as or less than TSA PreCheck, Global Entry is recommended immediately because there’s no “extra cost” to break even on.
Don’t Forget the Non-Time Benefits (Stress, Missed Connections, Group Travel)
This calculator focuses on time savings from faster entry on international return and doesn’t include secondary benefits like reduced stress, fewer missed connections, or convenience for traveling companions. If those factors matter a lot to you, your personal “worth it” decision may lean toward Global Entry even when the time-based break-even lands outside your chosen horizon.
