Estimate Compost Volume and the Number of Bags to Buy

This calculator helps you figure out how much compost you need to cover a garden bed at a specific depth, using the bed’s length and width. If you also enter bag weight and a compost density assumption, it converts the required volume into an estimated bag count (with an optional low/high range).

From Bed Dimensions to Compost Bags (Step-by-Step)

First it calculates bed area in square feet: length × width. Then it converts your desired depth from inches to feet (depth ÷ 12) and computes required volume: area × depth. Finally, it estimates weight (volume × density) and divides by bag size to estimate the number of bags you’ll need.

Why Bag Estimates Vary (Density, Moisture, and Settling)

Compost is not a uniform material—density can change with moisture content, how much it’s been screened, and whether it’s loosely filled or slightly compacted. That’s why the calculator lets you choose a low/medium/high density assumption and can show a low/high bag range. Real-world results can be lower or higher than the estimate, especially if you’re spreading chunky compost or working with very dry material.

Common Input Mistakes That Throw Off Results

Make sure bed dimensions are entered as the actual rectangular coverage area—this tool assumes a simple rectangle and uniform depth across the entire bed. Avoid depths of 0 (or near-zero) and double-check bag size units are in pounds. If your bed is extremely large, the calculated bag quantity may exceed typical retail bag counts, so consider buying in bulk or reassessing how you’ll transport/apply compost.
